How to Organize an Intimate and Elegant Wedding

Hello, I am Jon Santamaría, and as a wedding photographer, I have had the privilege of being a silent witness to hundreds of “I dos.” I have seen massive weddings filled with roaring energy, and I have also discovered the magic hidden within smaller celebrations. If there is one thing I have learned over the years, it is that the size of a wedding does not define its greatness. In fact, some of the most spectacular and deeply moving weddings I have ever photographed have been intimate ones.

Many couples come to me with the exact same doubt: “How can we have an elegant wedding without inviting 300 people?”. There seems to be a preconceived notion that “elegance” is synonymous with “grandeur.” But let me tell you a secret: true elegance resides in the details, in the personalization, and in the atmosphere you create. And that, my friends, is much easier to achieve when you are surrounded solely by your closest inner circle. If you are dreaming of a small, charming wedding but don’t know where to start, here are a few ideas and tips drawn from my experience behind the lens.

1. The Venue: Your Personal Sanctuary

When you think of wedding venues, your mind usually drifts to massive estates or grand hotel ballrooms. But in an intimate wedding, the rules completely change. You have the freedom to choose unique spaces that truly tell your story. What about a wedding in a charming rural house in the heart of the forest? Or the courtyard of a boutique hotel that only you and your guests will occupy? I have photographed ceremonies in art galleries, in family-owned wineries where the wine is poured directly from the barrel, and even on the deck of a sailboat at sunset.

The key is to look for venues for small weddings that do not need much to shine. A Michelin-starred restaurant with a private dining room, a villa overlooking the sea, or a historic masía (traditional country house) can easily become the perfect setting. By having fewer guests, you can allocate more budget to a venue that you truly fall in love with, creating an exclusive and welcoming environment that a large wedding can rarely match.

2. The Gastronomic Experience: A Feast for the Senses

One of the greatest advantages of intimate weddings is being able to elevate the culinary experience. Instead of the typical wedding menu, you can design an unforgettable gastronomic journey. Talk to the chef, create a tasting menu that narrates your travels or features your favorite dishes. Imagine a single imperial table, exquisitely decorated with flowers and candles, where all your loved ones sit together, sharing laughter and conversation.

This format, known as a “family wedding dinner,” fosters an incredible connection. The toasts feel more personal, meaningful glances multiply, and, as a photographer, I assure you that the images captured within that warm atmosphere are pure emotion. You can invest in live show cooking, a signature cocktail bar, or a wine pairing guided by a sommelier. These details turn the dinner into one of the absolute highlights of the celebration.

3. The Decor and Details: Tell Your Story

This is where an intimate and elegant wedding truly shines. Every single detail counts. From the wedding invitations—which can be hand-calligraphed and sent in a special box—to the guest wedding favors, which can be personalized and meaningful objects rather than a generic keepsake.
Think about the wedding decor. You can treat yourselves to more spectacular florals, carefully curated lighting, and custom-designed stationery (menus, place cards, etc.) that follow an impeccable aesthetic line. Music also plays a crucial role. A string quartet during the ceremony, a pianist during the cocktail hour, or a smooth jazz band during dinner creates a sophisticated and enveloping soundtrack. Because you don’t have the pressure of a packed dance floor, you can focus entirely on creating moments.

4. Photography: Capturing the Essence

From my perspective, intimate weddings are a dream. They allow me to move with complete freedom, capturing not just the big milestones, but the passing glances, the hugs that last just a bit longer, and the tears of happiness that escape without warning. In a small wedding, I have the time to connect with you and your guests, to understand the dynamics, and to anticipate the emotions. The result is a documentary-style and deeply moving wedding gallery—a visual legacy that captures the true essence of your love and the people who walked alongside you.

So, if you are hesitating, if you feel the social pressure of a massive guest list but your heart is calling for something more personal, listen to it. An intimate wedding is not a “lesser” wedding. It is a conscious decision to prioritize quality over quantity, emotion over spectacle.

It is, ultimately, a celebration of love in its purest and most elegant form.

I would be absolutely delighted to be there to tell it.
