A Guide for Couples Who Hate Posing
As a wedding photographer in San Sebastián, and after years of accompanying very different couples, I have learned that many of them share a common fear: posing. And it doesn’t surprise me. Posing can sound artificial, uncomfortable, or even intimidating, especially when you are not used to being in front of a camera. That is why every time a couple tells me, “Jon, we just don’t know how to pose,” I smile. Not because I take it lightly, but because I know you don’t need to know how to do it.
My approach is not based on rigid poses or complicated instructions. It is based on reading the moment, understanding your energy as a couple, and letting things flow naturally. Because the most beautiful photos do not come from a perfect pose; they come from a real gesture, a shared look, or a spontaneous laugh that appears the moment you forget about the camera for a second.
The key lies in creating an environment where you feel comfortable, supported, and free to be yourselves. In the Basque Country, the light and the spaces are constantly changing, and I adapt to them—and to you—so that every image is born from authenticity. Sometimes, a quiet walk along a path, a hug by the sea, or a moment of silence right before you look at each other is enough. It is not about posing: it is about living the moment, and I will be there to capture it.
It is also important to understand that not all locations work the same way for every couple. Some people open up more in intimate spaces, others feel more free in nature, and others prefer to keep moving. That is why I accompany you before and during the session to choose the location and the type of dynamic that best fits who you are. My mission is to make you feel comfortable from the very first minute, without pressure or forced expectations.
Even during the most structured moments of the day, such as the preparations or the family photos, my job consists of guiding you gently—always looking for the right light and the most flattering angle without you having to worry about a thing. If there is one thing I have learned, it is that the best photographs are born when a couple trusts, breathes, and allows themselves to enjoy.
In this guide, I will share ideas, tips, and real-life examples designed for all those couples who hate posing but still want natural, honest memories of their wedding. We will talk about how to relax in front of the camera, how to choose the best time and place for your session, and how to let the light, the surroundings, and your own energy do the rest.
My goal is for you to discover that you don’t have to pose to have incredible photos. You only need to be yourselves. I will take care of the rest.
